Rare Antique Victorian Large Treen Spice Chest of Drawers
A lovely and rare example of a large treen Victorian spice cabinet featuring seven drawers with their original labels. A well made piece which is in excellent condition and would look fabulous as part of a kitchenalia collection or in daily use.
Dating from the late 1800s, the spice chest has standard sized drawers for Mustard, Cloves, Caraways, Allspice, Cinnamon, Allspice and Pepper, and a larger drawer at the bottom for Bay Leaves.
Complete with all of its original labels and white porcelain handles, the chest is in excellent overall condition with a lovely rich colour and patination.
The chest itself is still very sturdy and is in solid condition, as are the drawers. Remnants of glue can be seen on the back of some of the drawers, and I’m uncertain whether this is from the time of construction or if they are later repairs. There is also some very light staining to some of the drawers from where they have been used.
There is some wear and oxidisation to the aluminium labels on each of the drawers which has faded the lettering and some of the edges of the labels have broken away. However, they are all still legible and the loss on the edges is minimal. There are also some tiny splashes of paint on the top of the chest, but these are very small and not overly notable. Overall, it’s a lovely piece of antique kitchenalia to have on display – and make use of – in the kitchen today. Complete with its original hook to hang on the wall, this can be hung up or will stand proudly on display on a counter top.
