Large Antique Victorian Carved English Bread Board with Welcome Motto

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A lovely example of a large antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the late 1800s, with a “Welcome” motto flanked by wheat ears and detailed carved floral decoration.

This 19th Century breadboard has a wonderfully mellow patina. Worn from use over time, it’s a lovely example of an antique carved English bread board which is still good for day to day use now. The border of this board is carved with the word “Welcome” in stylised, gothic style script, with wheat ears and carved leaves and floral decoration framing the bottom of the border. The carving, most notably of the Welcome motto and wheat ears, has worn through use over time. Nonetheless, it is still quite clear and the floral decoration at the bottom of the border is much more clearly defined still.

The board is in overall great condition and sits flat. There are old knife marks from use, but these have blended well into the patina of the board, creating a natural timeworn appeal. It has been scrubbed through regular washing over time, however regular waxing will restore a deeper colouring to the breadboard if desired. There is a small knock to the rim of the breadboard on the back, plus a patch of some small cracks which is a feature of the board’s age but will not worsen through ongoing care and maintenace of the board.
