Antique Victorian White Ironstone English Advertising Pot – J Sainsburys Bloater Paste
This is a listing for ONE of the rarer shaped antique Victorian J Sainsbury’s shallow bloater paste pots. A total of three are available to choose from. They are all good clean examples with clear transfers but with varying degrees of chippiness.
These white ironstone English advertising pots were handmade to be sold containing food products in the J Sainsbury’s grocers shops. Sainsbury’s still exists and is now one of the top supermarkets in the UK, although bloater paste has now been rebranded!
The pots all feature the same black transfer print advertising their bloater paste. As most jars were discarded with common waste at the time, they often have discoloration and chips. However, this adds to their charm as highly decorative, weathered and chippy pieces.
These examples were recently recovered from a Victorian dump. In spite of this, they are all in great overall condition, and are quite clean. They are all chipped to varying degrees, as listed below, but these features cannot be seen from the front and add to their character. They are great collectors items and they also make excellent small serving dishes. I personally use these for olives, butter, cream and jam (the possibilities are endless…)
LEFT POT: In overall clean condition, there is some light crazing mainly towards the top of this pot. There is also a significant chip on the base rim at the back.
MIDDLE POT: Overall this is very clean with just some age spotting around the top rim. There is a chip to the base rim at the back of the pot but this is also quite clean.
RIGHT POT: An overall very clean example, but with a few chips to the base and also a more significant chip to the side of the pot at the base.
