Antique Victorian Carved Ivory Bread Knife with Decorative Wheatsheaf Handle
A wonderful antique English carved ivory bread knife, dating from the 1800s.
This Victorian bread knife, with its carved ivory handle with wheat sheaf decoration, is in nice condition for its age. Ivory bread knives like these were of a much higher quality than the more common treen knives. And although there is an old split in the ivory on the underside (which is stable) the carved wheat handles still have lovely carved detailing on each side. The steel blade is engraved with the maker’s name and address, I. Putley of 44 Boro, with a ‘London Made’ stamp. The steel blade has tarnished with age through contact with water, as is very common with pieces of this age.
In summary, this is an excellent piece of quality antique kitchenalia which will look lovely on display.
