Victorian English Treen Carved Butter Stamp With Flower Detail

antique edwardian 1920s smiths crisps shop display glass jar counter

A wonderful large antique English Victorian butter stamp, with a rustic flower and leaf pattern carved into the wood.

This is a great piece of antique kitchenalia, perfect for giving a farmhouse feel to any display and for ongoing use imprinting its simple yet charming flower pattern into a butter round.

The large butter mould/mold is rich in colour. The carving is quite deep, although this has worn over time to leave a lovely smooth and warm patina, and has a turned wood handle. As well as the flower pattern, the butter print has a strong border that has also been carved in detail.

The mould is in very good condition. Although the carving has faded a little it is still clear and would make a nice impression still. There are some minor cracks in the surface of the wood which have occurred as the butter mould has aged. One of these has split the wood on the side of the mould 2cm in length. There are also a few minor grease marks on the base of the mushroom print. These types of flaws are very common in these types of butter stamps and do not detract from its overall appearance or affect its use in any way. Appropriate storage and occasional waxing of the wood will ensure the wood does not crack any further.

Height, 10cm; Width, 10cm.
