Victorian White Ironstone English Advertising Pot for Young’s Potted Shrimp Leigh on Sea

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

This is a listing for one rare antique Victorian English Advertising Pot for Young’s Potted Shrimps in Leigh-on-Sea.

These shallow English advertising pots are quite scarce, especially in a clean condition like this with the black transferprint font still exceptionally clear. In Victorian times – as now – a trip to a British seaside resort was an extremely popular pastime, especially for those wanting to escape the crowded and unhealthy big cities. These pots would have been used by customers purchasing small servings of shrimp. Even now, there are still many shrimp stalls adorning the seafronts in places like Leigh-on-Sea.

Recovered from a Victorian dump, it’s common for many old advertising pots like this to have lots of imperfections, crazing, staining, chips and cracks. These aged features all add to the character of pieces like this today. However, both these pots are in overall good clean condition with the scripted font of the transfer print across the front of the pots still very clear. Both have some chips and wear as listed below.

LEFT POT: This pot is very clean with some minor crazing in places and odd patches of discoloration. This has been chipped during its time underground, with some small chips to the base and top rims. However, on the whole these are quite small and do not detract given the clarity of the script, which is a good example of the extravagence of the era.
