Victorian Deeply Carved Treen Butter Dish with Willow Liner & Leaf Pattern

antique edwardian 1920s smiths crisps shop display glass jar counter

This is a wonderful example of a late Victorian carved English wooden butter dish, complete with a willow patterned ceramic liner.

This rich coloured treen butter dish features intricate and deeply carved detail of three leaves, on a stalk which is weaved around the edge of the dish. It is rare to find the carvings on these types of dishes so intricate and detailed.

This butter dish is in excellent condition, with hardly any signs of use on either the wood or the ironstone butter pat. The original ceramic willow liner has been glued to the base to stop it from slipping when in use and there is also some tape or glue residue on the back of the butter dish. The ceramic liner is also in great condition, with no crazing or cracks. The butter pat is a little smaller than normal in width (9.5cm in diameter), which allowed for more space on the wood for carved detail.

Height, 3cm; Width, 17cm.
