Antique Victorian Carved English Treen Butter Stamp with Wheatsheaf Decoration
A quality and rare piece of antique treen kitchenalia dating from the late nineteenth Century, with an excellent and deeply carved wheatsheaf design.
This is a fantastic example of an antique butter stamp, with excellent carved detail. The wheatsheaf design on butter stamps was a symbol of the type of farm the butter came from, in this case an arable farm. The carving is still incredibly sharp and crisp, with the detail very striking and detailed, with tiny details like the ribbon tying the sheaf together, not forgotten. It’s a super and highly collectable piece.
The butter stamp is in excellent overall condition and is a great size. The outer casing, which would help to cut the shape of the butter, does have a small number of old worm holes. These have been treated and there are none on the stamp itself. There are no cracks on this piece.
Height, 8.5cm; Diameter, 7cm (overall); 5cm (face of the stamp)
