Antique 1800s Carved English Bread Board with Waste Not Motto & Carved Wheat Ears

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful carved treen wooden breadboard, dating from the 1800s, with a “Waste Not” motto flanked by two carved wheat ears & leaves.

This 19th Century breadboard just oozes character and is a wonderful example. The border of this board is carved with the words “Waste Not” in stylised, gothic style script, with wheat ears and long leaves on each side. It has a lovely rich honey colour. The finish on the board is rather primitive and rustic, which adds significant charm to the piece.

The board is in overall great condition. There is an old split in the side of the wood, however it is a very solid piece and sits flat. There are some minor knife marks and wear to the lettering from age, however it has been kept in very good condition, as most knife marks on the back, highlighting the care taken to look after the breadboard by its previous owners. At some point, it looks like the board has also been varnished but this adds to the character and is still usable. The rustic nature of the finish is highlighted by the fact that it is slightly larger in width than height. It is a great collection piece.
