Victorian Carved English Bread Knife with Sheffield Steel Blade

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful English deeply carved wooden bread knife, dating from the mid to late 1800s.

This Victorian treen bread knife has been engraved “BREAD” which is very deep, with little wear, and clearly stands out on the piece. The hardwood handle has a warm rich colour and patina to it. The steel blade is still very sharp and carries the makers mark for “Atkinson Bros, Sheffield” and has the words “Bread Knife” etched onto it in scrolled text.

The steel blade has tarnished and oxidised in a number of places from exposure to water over time, most notably close to the collar. It is possible to clean this with lemon juice, but it is also fine to use as it is. If you are using the knife regularly, it is important to clean it with a dry cloth rather than using water or wet substances on it, as this is how the steel stains.

The wooden handle is in superb condition and has a wonderful dark patina to it.
