Antique Victorian Carved English Treen Bread Board with a “Want Not” Motto

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A wonderful example of an antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the late 1800s, with a “Want Not” motto flanked by wheat ears.

This 19th Century breadboard just oozes character and charm, with its rich colour and patina. It’s a lovely example of an antique carved English bread board. The border of this board is carved with the words “Want Not” in stylised, gothic style script, with wheat ears and simply carved leaves on each side. It has been well looked after, and waxed regularly, resulting in a rich and deep patina.

The board is in overall great condition. There are old knife marks from use, but these have blended well into the patina of the board, creating a natural timeworn appeal. The board is raised by about 0.5cm on the side where the motto is, resulting in a slight wobble if pressed down on this side. However, this doesn’t affect use and it still displays well.
