Rare Antique Carved English Butter Knife with Etched Steel Blade
A rarely seen example of a deeply carved treen handled English butter knife, dating from the late Victorian period, with a steel blade.
The handle features the word “BUTTER” deeply carved and framed on it. The detail on the carving is still very clear, and the handle has a lovely finial end. Carved utensils such as this have become increasingly popular in recent years and ‘Butter’ knives like these are getting harder to source. But it’s especially rare to find one with a plain steel blade; they more commonly have plated blades.
The steel blade has ‘Butter Knife’ also etched onto the blade. It has some minor tarnishing but is overall very solid and has a simple yet dignified style. Shaped to fit the handle precisely, the fitting is of quality and sound construction. The handle is in lovely condition, with ‘Butter’ carved into it.
This is a wonderful piece of English kitchenalia which is getting harder to find and would make a lovely addition to a country style of rustic farmhouse kitchen.
