Antique Carved Victorian Treen Bread Board “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”

antique edwardian 1920s smiths crisps shop display glass jar counter

A wonderful example of an English Victorian carved breadboard, featuring the motif “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”.

These English carved treen breadboards are becoming rarer and rarer to source, especially with motifs carved around the edge. This is a lovely version of a Victorian bread board, with the carved motif running around most of the board, with carved flower and leaf detail sitting at the bottom of the board.

Considering the age of the piece, it is in very good condition, with the carved stylised writing still very clear and no cracks or splits in the wood. Although the base of the board is very slightly cupped in the middle, the board sits nice and flat with no slipping or movement when in use. The board has a smooth and worn patina to it, and the carving in some places has been worn down through use. This is most notable on the “G”, although it is still clearly legible. There are also some marks and scratches around the board from use. There are also some odd splash marks of paint.

I have not waxed this board, but it would look even more wonderful waxed and buffed.

Width, 30cm; Height, 2cm.
