Antique Victorian Carved English Treen Bread Knife
A wonderful English nicely carved wooden bread knife, dating from the latter part of the 1800s.
This Victorian treen bread knife, with its carved “BREAD” handle is in wonderful condition for its age. With a finial end, the quality hardwood handle is still nice and clear and has a wonderful mellow finish and feel to it, and is attached to the blade with a quality joint, highlighting the handmade nature of this piece. Although the carving has faded with time, it is still very clear and legible, and the handle has a lovely rich colour to it.
The steel blade is in very good condition. They are normally very tarnished and oxidised from contact with water, but the staining on this isn’t too significant. The blade is etched with “Bread Knife” in gothic stylised writing. The maker’s name, M. Hunter & Son, of Sheffield, is also on the blade together with a horn logo.
In summary, this is an excellent piece of antique treen kitchenalia which will look lovely on display but is also good for ongoing day to day use.
