Antique Victorian Carved Sycamore Bread Board

antique edwardian 1920s smiths crisps shop display glass jar counter

A nice example of a carved circular bread board, dating from the early part of the twentieth Century, featuring gothic style carved lettering.

Made of sycamore, this breadboard is slightly smaller than normal measuring 26cm in diameter and 1.5cm thick. The word “Bread” is deeply carved in stylised lettering at the top of the board which is still very clear. This carving is flanked by the simple carving of leaves on each side. This carving has worn a little from use.

The bread board sits nice and flat, and is still very usable today. It also looks fantastic on display. The wood has a rich, dark warm colour to it, although this has faded a little more on the left hand side of the board.

The board is in great condition for its age, with no splits in the wood. There are normal knife marks and some wear to the carving around the edge as is normal from use. The back of the board has some age spots in places. There is also a very small hole towards the top of the board, which is possibly evidence of where someone has tried to hang this on display previously.
