Antique Victorian Carved English Bread Knife with Wheat Ear Decoration
A fine example of a large and nicely carved Victorian bread knife, with wheat detail.
This steel bladed carved bread knife dates from the late 1800s. A handmade piece, it has a quality join between the blade and the handle.
The wheat detail on the handle is nicely carved and has a lovely finial end. The handle has a few minor scuffs and marks from age, but these don’t detract from its timeworn character.
It is joined to a steel blade has lightly oxidised in places from contact with water over the years, as is common with these types of knives. However, the words ‘Bread Knife’, etched into the blade, are still clearly visible in gothic stylised writing. The maker’s name is also visible.
Overall, though, it is a quality piece of treen kitchenalia.
Length, 33cm; Width, 3.5cm at widest point on blade.
