Antique Victorian Carved English Wooden Breadboard – Staff of Life Motto
A lovely example of a large antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the late 1800s, with a “Staff of Life” motto flanked by wheat ears and carved floral decoration at its base.
This 19th Century breadboard has a wonderfully mellow patina. Worn from use over time, it’s a lovely example of an antique carved English bread board which is still good for day to day use now. The border of this board is carved with the word “Staff of Life” in stylised, gothic style script, with wheat ears and carved floral decoration framing the bottom of the border.
This board has weathered and worn over time. All of the carving has had some wear, yet it is all very clear. The wooden border of the border has also either worn away or been knocked slightly. There is also the usual wear and knife marks all over. But the overall effect is a wonderful mellow finish.
The side of the board has also been scorched but this isn’t evident from the front. In spite of this, the board still sits flat and so is the perfect breadboard for day to day use as well as display.
