Large Pestle & Mortar by S Maw Son & Sons – Size 5

S Maw Son Sons 1900s edwardian pestle mortar large size 5

A large quality Victorian or Edwardian stoneware pestle and mortar, with its original matching hardwood handle. Made by S Maw Son & Sons between 1900 & 1920.

The large mortar has a pouring lip and is impressed “ACID PROOD” & “5”, denoting its size, on its base. The matching pestle is ceramic with a turned hardwood handle. It also has the size “5M” impressed on its side. The S Maw Son & Sons mark is printed on the base in black.

The inside of the mortar has stained and discolored through use. There are also some minor nibbles around the base and lip, with some scuff marks around the outside of the mortar. The pestle has a few small dents at its tip. Overall, though, it’s in excellent condition, and has a lovely smooth worn patina.

Width, 19cm (diameter of bowl, 14cm); Height, 10.5cm; Pestle Length, 24cm; Pestle Width (at base), 5.5cm.
