Rare Antique Victorian White Ironstone English Advertising Pot -Horner’s Devonshire Clotted Cream
A delightful Victorian white ironstone clotted cream pot, advertising Horner’s Devonshire Clotted Cream.
Having had some minor repair work, this antique advertising pot with the rarely seen purple transfer print is nonetheless still amongst my favourite pots.
Dating from the late 1800s, these pots were used to sell fresh clotted cream. The style of these advertising pots epitomises the Victorian era, with a lavish use of different, individually beautiful, fonts for each line of writing.
The passage on the back, extolling the virtues of clotted cream, is equally delightful:
“For use with Tarts, Stewed Fruits & c. it is unrivalled, and to Coffee, Cocoa and Chocolate, it gives a richness and flavour unapproachable. Children and persons requiring a nutritive diet are by its free use greatly benefitted, while as a rival to Cod Liver Oil, and in cases of debility and consumption, it is highly commended and prescribed by the Medical Profession.”
While this pot does have some light staining all over, it is a very clean example and the transfer print is still very clear. It has suffered a small amount of damage at some point, as there is a small chip repair to the top rim and there is a crack below this, although it is stable. However, it is a very rare pot to find and this doesn’t overly detract from the rest of the pot, which is stunning.
