Rare Victorian Antique Meredith & Drew’s Chocolate Wafers White Ironstone Shop Display Stand with Matching Glass Dome
This is a stunning rare late Victorian shop display stand for Meredith & Drew’s Chocolate Wafers, which is in excellent antique condition.
This is a scarce find. Since they were in daily use in shops in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the white ironstone plinth bases and glass cloches advertising Meredith Drew’s chocolate wafers were often damaged. It is difficult to find damaged examples, let alone an example that has survived so long with only minimal wear and tear like this.
It is a stunning piece of Victorian chocolate advertising ware and shows the lengths and detail producers would go to advertise their products. The base is a small white ironstone slab which features “Meredith & Drew’s Chocolate Wafers” around its edge in very clear under glaze black transfer print, in lovely typography. It is framed by a solid red and royal blue border both above and below the text.
The plinth is completed by a good sized glass cloche dome which sits snugly on the base. This also features the same text in acid etched blue writing across the front.
Considering the age of this piece, it is in excellent condition. There is some light crazing to the base, which has discolored in some places, most notably on the base. The glass cloche has some nibbles to its rim, most likely caused by the fact the cloche sits snugly on the white ironstone stand. Two of these have chipped more significantly onto the edge of the base of the lid, and there is also a small shard missing from the base rim.
The lettering on both the white ironstone stand and glass dome is still very clear, with the exception of the “C” on the glass lid, which has worn in part. Otherwise, though, this is an exceptional and very lovely piece of antique kitchenalia which would proudly grace any collection.
