Rare Antique Victorian Large Deeply Carved English Treen Butter Dish with Acorn & Oak Leaf Garland Border
This is a wonderful and rare example of a late Victorian carved English wooden butter dish, complete with a willow patterned ceramic liner.
Dating from around 1890, this rich coloured treen butter dish features intricate and deeply carved detail of an oak leaf and acorn garland.
The carving is exceptional, with fabulous detail on the acorns and a layered approach taken on the leaves on the bottom half. It is also the deepest I have seen on a butter dish, which is allowed for by the fact that this is uniquely quite a wide border. The original willow patterned liner is fixed into position in the middle of the board.
This butter dish is in good condition considering it’s age. The carving is just as crisp and sharp as the time it was produced. There is an old hairline to the liner but this is stable. There are also two old worm holes on the underside but the board has been treated for assurances.
