Rare Antique Victorian White Ironstone Stilton Cheese Cloche and Dish by Copeland
A wonderful and rarely seen example of an antique white ironstone cheese dome and footed dish, dating from the mid nineteenth Century, by Copeland.
Dating from the around the 1850s, this ironstone cheese dome was intended for use as a cheese keeper for stilton cheese. It is rare to see these now, especially in such lovely clean condition as this.
Decorated with embossed basket weave and lattice decoration, it is exceptionally difficult to find these in plain whiteware. It is an imposing and eye catching item to have on the home, both on display and for use.
Considering its age, this cheese cloche is in very good condition. It is a very clean example. There are some age marks dotted across the piece, which are more notable around the handle, as well as around the base rim and edge of the base plate, which also has a few surface scratches from previous use. There is a small chip repair approximately 1.5cm by 1cm in size on the edge of the top rim of the base. On the bottom of the base itself, there is also a small chip which is about 1cm by 1cm in size.
However, on the whole, it’s in very good condition with no crazing and is very clean.
