Rare Antique Victorian ‘The Staff of Life’ Deeply Carved Wooden Bread or Cheese Board with Its Original Liner Plate
A beautiful example of a rarely seen Victorian English deeply carved cheese or ‘Staff of Life’ bread board, with its original ceramic liner.
Antique cheese or bread boards are rarely seen, especially with their ceramic liner plates. This Victorian example, dating from the mid to late 1800s, is an excellent and rare example.
Made of sycamore, the border of this board is extremely well carved. The motto, ‘The Staff of Life’, is still exceptionally crisp, deep and clear, and has a wonderful backdrop of tiny flowers.
It’s extremely rare to find these boards with their original ceramic liners. This example is glued into place and features a striking blue floral pattern.
This antique board sits flat and is perfectly usable. It has suffered a small amount of damage in its time. The top of the board has some insect damage but the board has been fully treated. There is also a hairline crack across the middle of the ceramic plate. As the liner is fixed into position, it is nonetheless stable and doesn’t affect use of the board.
These English carved treen cheese and bread boards are becoming rarer and rarer to source, especially in good condition with the carving still sharp and deep like on this example. It would make a fabulous addition to any kitchenalia collection.
