Rare Antique Victorian Large Wooden Butter Moud or Stamp with Timeworn Wheatsheaf Decoration
A quality and rare piece of antique treen kitchenalia dating from the early to mid nineteenth Century, with a wonderfully carved wheatsheaf design and rich patina.
This is a large example of an antique butter stamp, with nicely carved detail. The wheatsheaf design on butter stamps was a symbol of the type of farm the butter came from, in this case an arable farm.
The border of the butter stamp has worn from use over time, however the carving of the wheatsheaf is still very clear and recognisable. This wear, however, adds to the overall patina of the piece.
Apart from the wear to the face of the stamp, it is otherwise in very good condition with no splits or cracks and has an integral handle. At some point in its history, dark wax has been used to maintain the stamp, again adding to the rich patina.
