Rare Antique Victorian Large Carved English Wooden Butter Stamp Decorated with Roses – likely Wedding Gift

antique victorian rare large carved english butter stamp rose decoration wedding present

A wonderful and rarely seen example of an antique Victorian carved butter stamp.

A large example, this butter stamp features intricate detailed carving of two roses. Typically, roses symbolise love and, having the two together, it’s more than likely this was intended as a wedding gift in the mid to late 1800s.

In nice condition, the carving and its border are intricately carved. There is some wear and some small age cracks to the centre of the stamp but overall the carving is still very crisp and sharp. It’s certainly still very usable, perhaps for biscuits.

The handle is screwed into position. There are some old grease marks on the back of the stamp from where it has previously been used, as well as evidence of old worm holes (3 on the handle and 1 in the face of the stamp) and tracks. However, these have been treated. There are also some traces of wax on the stamp itself which have dried.
