Rare Antique Early 20th Century White Ironstone French Bocquet Mustard Pot By Sarreguemines
This is a listing for a rarely seen antique French white ironstone double sided advertising pot for “Bocquet” mustard, dating from the early 20th Century.
Like all French ironstone pots, this is a sturdy and heavy antique advertising pot, made by Sarreguemines. It is a very rare subject, and features beautiful and intricate imagery and typography on both sides of the pot. The elaborate styling is typically French.
These old white ironstone French pots are very collectable, making wonderful display items which are also perfect for use as small bud vases.
Originally discarded, this pot has since been dig up from an old dumping ground. Unfortunately, it must have been in quite a state when it was dug up as some rather naive repairs have been carried out on one side of the pot. This restoration – both to the body and the top rim – is very obvious and does affect how the pot is displayed. However, given its rarity – and the fact that these repairs are focused on one side – it is possible to very easily hide these and still enjoy this decorative advertising pot.
There are also some wider flaws to this pot, which has a hairline about 4cm in length running down from the rim, and some chips to the glaze in places. However, these, together with the off-white colouring of the piece, add timeworn charm to it. And overall it’s a very handsome old mustard pot.
