Rarely Seen Antique Early 20th Century White Ironstone Margarine Dairy Slab in Excellent Condition
An extremely rare and highly desirable antique white ironstone grocers shop slab for ‘Margarine’, which is in excellent condition.
These ironstone shop slabs were used in grocers or butchers shops to proudly display the goods on offer. In the absence of widespread refrigeration, ironstone slabs such as these were used to keep goods, especially dairy products, cool.
Dating from the early 20th Century, this example – for ‘Margarine’ – is now a very rare example, and is in excellent clean condition. The under glaze black transfer print ‘Margarine’ text is still very clear and there is very little staining to this piece. Further, there are no chips or cracks. It’s extremely rare to find them in such clean condition as this. It’s a heavy and sturdy piece, weighing 3.5kg.
There is some light glaze crazing across the piece, as well as a number of minor age spots, seen mainly dotted around the top rim. On the back of the dairy slab are two small unglazed firing marks at each end. There are also a few surface scratches in places. However, overall, the piece is very clean. There is an impressed and printed date or maker’s mark on the underside, although I do not recognise this.
Antique dairy slabs like these very rarely become available, especially in such good condition. It’s a great piece of antique advertising which displays well and is also perfect as a centrepiece when entertaining.
