Scarce Antique Victorian White Ironstone Tongue Plate with Advertising Logo for Dudley & Company Shopfitters
This is a fabulous and very rarely seen example of an antique Victorian white ironstone tongue dish, which would have been used for display purposes in a butchers shop.
In clear under glazed black transfer print, the word ‘TONGUE’ sits across the lip of this plate. And on the back is an excellent trademark for the shop outfitters, Dudley & Company, who would have sold these plates to butchers across the UK. It’s unusual to see this style of plate, and even rarer for it to be in such excellent condition.
At the time, these plates would have been used in butchers shops to display the tongue it had for sale, which was a popular dish then.
They now make excellent display pieces as part of a kitchenalia or white ironstone collection.
This plate is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. The main signs of age are some light surface crazing and mild age spots to the outer rim. There are also some very small areas where there are some splatters of paint on the underside. However, overall this is a very clean example with the transfer still extremely clear.
