Rare Antique Victorian Carved English Butter Board or Dish with Wheat & Barley Decoration
This is a wonderful example of a late Victorian carved English wooden butter dish, complete with a willow patterned ceramic liner.
Dating from around 1890, this honey coloured treen butter dish is quite unique, featuring carving of wheat on one side and barley on the other side of the board, with ‘Butter’ beautifully carved and framed at the top. The backdrop is also quite intricate, with scattered stars carved across it. The union of barley and wheat on boards like this often featured when they were intended for use as wedding presents.
The carving is exquisite and just as clear as when the item was first produced. The willow patterned liner doesn’t quite sit flush inside the board but is still usable.
This butter dish is in good condition considering it’s age. Tape has previously been used to fix the inner plate into position during transit. This has been left on for some time, resulting in this area being unexposed to sunlight. And so a small band can be seen where the tape was previously fixed. This is mainly notable on the back of the board, although small sections can also be seen either side of the liner in the middle. However, this isn’t overly notable and may blend in with regular waxing.
