Rare 1940s Extra Large Bread Basket Supplied by The Ministry of Food
A super and rare example of a large wicker bread basket, dating from the Second World War, featuring initials for the Ministry of Food.
This antique bread basket is an extremely rare find. Dating from the late 1930s or early 1940s, this basket would have been used in bakeries to display the rationed baked produce that was available. Established during the war, it was the role of the Ministry of Food to help ensure there were sufficient supplies of food in the country.
This bread basket is an excellent large size and would make an extremely interesting display feature in the home, with the ‘M.O.F’ initials featuring on both sides of the basket and still very clear.
The basket itself is In good condition considering its age. There are some old worm holes to the wicker but these have been treated. It is in solid condition, with the main areas of wear to the base and around the bottom rim, a result of where this would have been in daily use. However, there are no significant breakages on the main part of the frame and the basket is good to use.
An interesting and unusual piece of British history, this is an excellent decorative piece of kitchenalia.
