This is an excellent example of a Victorian deeply carved wooden English bread knife.
Dating from the late 1800s, this bread knife is exceptionally and intricately carved. Featuring two rosettes intertwined in the surrounding foliage, the layering and detail of the carving creates a beautiful and delicate effect. Although there is some minor wear in places, the carving is still nice and deep. It is finished with a lovely finial end.
The steel blade is fixed firmly in position and is good for many more years of use. There is a little tarnishing, as is common for steel blades. But the etched detail of 'Bread Knife' and the maker's mark of WH Green & Co of Chelmsford is still clearly visble.
In overall excellent condition, this carved bread knife is perfect for day to day use in the kitchen or shown off on display as part of an antique kitchenalia or treen collection.
Length, 31.5cm; Widest point of handle, 3.2cm
