A fine and very rarely seen example of an early 20th Century shop counter glass display jar, used in grocers shops to advertise and sell Rowntrees Pastilles loosely by the measure.
This deceivingly large glass jar would have sat on shop counters, advertising the sweets for sale and having them available or customers to sample.
Made to advertise the famous sweet company, "ROWNTREE'S PASTILLES" is etched onto the glass on the front of the jar. On the underside is a British Made mark and the registration number.
This is a heavy and sturdy glass jar. It would make a perfect talking and feature point in any home, and I can see this being used to hold sweets in at family gatherings and parties.
In overall very good condition, there is a small fault to the glass under the Rowntree's label. There are also some minor air bubbles and scratches to the base of the jar. The original lid, which would have seen wear from regular use, does have a couple of knocks and chips to the rim. However, otherwise it is in good condition.
Length, 29cm; Width, 13.5cm; Height, 19cm
