This is a lovely example of a rare extra large 6lb stoneware butter crock, advertising McSymon's Stores Choice Butter.

The two tone Scottish stoneware crock includes its original lid and features the trademark of McSymon's Stores, which were based in Liverpool and Greenock but also had stores nationally. It dates to around 1910.

This extra large six pound version was very likely used in the stores to store butter which was sold. It can of course still be used to store butter in the home but is also a lovely size to make a decorative feature of in the home.

The crock is in excellent condition. There are some minor nibbles to the edge of the lid, no doubt from years of use, but otherwise the underglaze transfer is clear and there are no significant chips or cracks.
