Rare Antique Victorian Deeply Carved Teapot Stand with Basket Weave Pattern & Rope Border
This is a very rarely available deeply carved antique Victorian teapot stand, dating to the 1800s.
While the board appears on the face of it a simple style, it is in a very rarely found basket weave pattern, where the horizontal strips are carved to mimic a basket, weaving over and under each strand. Only the most experienced carvers would produce boards like this because they involved a great degree of intricacy. And even then, mistakes were often made. Consequently, it was costly both to produce and purchase items in this style.
This stand is further enhanced by a thickly carved rope border, perhaps a nod to Great Britain's shipping and naval history.
The wood has a deep, rich and warm colour to it. The stand itself is in very nice condition considering its age. There is some wear to the edge and some light staining to a small part of the border. It appears a small amount of glue has also dried onto a small section of the stand at some point too. However, overall it is an excellent example which shows off the workmanship which went into carved pieces such as this and is also still very usable.
