This 18th Century plate is just stunning, and oozes charm with an old stapled repair.
Dating from the mid 1700s, this plate is almost 300 years old! So while it does show signs of age, it is remarkable that is still survives.
Hand painted in a beautiful blue, with a central floral emblem and a highly decorative border of scrolls and geometric motifs, the rustic naivety of the free hand of the painter really stands out.
With an old stapled repair to the back, which occurred long before glue was widely available, shows just how treasured this piece was. There are rust marks where these have worn and oxidised over time but these old repairs are worthy of display in their own right.
Aside from the obvious crack and repair work, there is wear to the glaze which is mostly notable on the rim of the plate. On the whole, though, it's a stunning piece.
