A rare extra large Victorian plain white ironstone mixing bowl, with tipping spout, in excellent condition.

Bearing a small standard impressed mark on its base, this fabulous mixing bowl dates to the late 1800s or start of the 20th Century.

Extra large cream and dairy bowls like this were designed to be put to practical use to support produce making in dairies. A bowl of this size was possibly used in a dairy for settling cream of milk. Given their history, and obvious fragility, it is a wonder that any survived, especially in such good condition as this.

The bowl itself stands proudly on a wide footed base, with a pronounced spout on one side. In excellent condition, there are no cracks or chips. There are some age related patches of staining around the top rim of the bowl, as well as some mildly stained crazing on the inside, the result of this bowl being put to practical use. There are also tripod firing marks visible on the inside, a common feature on bowls like this. The base rim also shows signs of discolouration and wear. However, on the whole, this is still a very clean example. It’s an excellent item and a very grand piece for any kitchenalia or white ironstone collector.
