This is a large rare Edwardian barrel banded ironstone butter dish or crock featuring a ribbon framed black underglazed 'Butter' label to the front.

In Edwardian times, butter dishes were used commonly to keep butter cool. This large version would probably have been used in the kitchen of a large household.

Dating from the early 1900s, this butter dish certainly shows signs of its age, with heavy timeworn staining all over. This gives the dish a unique patina though, and has been caused from years of use and contact with grease. Although there is no lid, the dish is still very usable as a butter dish when entertaining.

There is no crazing or cracks but there does appear to be a hairline crack on the back of the dish. The whole piece is solid though, and so is still good for use or display.

With a barrel banded effect surrounding the butter dish, this is a very handsome piece of antique kitchenalia. It's perfectly usable in a kitchen today, or would look great on display.
