This is a rare Edwardian white barrel banded ironstone butter dish, complete with its original lid, in very good condition.

In Edwardian times, butter dishes were used commonly to keep butter cool.

Dating from the early 1900s, this butter dish is in good condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. The black transfer print ‘Butter’ label is still very clear.

There are patches age spots all over but, most notably, there are grease marks to the top rim and across the top of the lid, although these are focused mainly on one side. These marks are very common on these dishes and are the result of daily use in a busy household. Often they can also have a dairy smell to them to, but this example doesn’t. The marks add a unique patina and show the history of the piece. However, if you’re looking for a perfectly clean white ironstone dish then this item wouldn’t be for you.

With a barrel banded effect surrounding the butter dish, this is a very handsome piece of antique kitchenalia. The white ceramic is still very strong in its colour, as is the black transfer print. It's perfectly usable in a kitchen today, or would look great on display.
