This is an excellent quality antique English white ironstone compote dish, dating from the early 20th Century.

It is hard to source these beautifully shaped bowls in plain white ironstone. This one, English in origin and with a mark dating it to the early to mid 20th Century, is in lovely antique condition. Made by J & G Meakin, this company was renowned for quality ironstone pieces.

This compote has a simple, classic shape and has a good height to it. They are great for use as a kitchen centrepiece, for fruit like lemons and limes, or as a large dessert bowl.

It is in lovely condition, with no cracks. There is some mild surface crazing to the top of the bowl and some mild age spots to the top rim, reflecting the age of the piece. There are also some minor firing faults on the top and side of the dish, as well as three tripod marks to the base which is a result of the production process. But these aren’t overly notable and don’t detract from the overall clean condition of this compote, which is a perfect display piece.
