Maling Cetem Ware Collectable White Cabbage Press

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

This is a wonderful example of a rare and scarce piece of antique English kitchenalia which shines a light on the past. Such a unique item would make a fabulous addition to a whiteware or ironstone collection.

Made by Maling of Newcastle, this Cetem Ware cabbage press was used for helping to weigh cabbage down during the fermentation and preserving process. Some of these presses come with a matching base, although I have never seen one like this and have only ever seen them sold separately before.

The Maling Cetem Ware mark is on the back of the cabbage press, in faded green transfer print.

This is a unique piece which is in good overall condition. There is crazing on both sides, and also a small hairline on the top rim. However, it is still a very stable and in tact piece. It could again be used as a cabbage press for making sauerkraut, or alternatively as a butter press. It is such a unique item that it would also look lovely simply on display in the kitchen.
