Rare 1900s Antique White Ironstone Dairy or Grocers Display Slab
A wonderful example of a rare large ironstone grocers dairy slab, dating from the early part of the twentieth Century.
These ironstone slabs were used by dairies, grocers and butchers before refrigeration was in widespread use. Slabs like these were often placed outside on a block of ice overnight, which would cool the ironstone pottery enough to display dairy and meat produce the following day. In daily use, it is rare to see them in such good condition as this slab is, without restoration or significant wear.
This sturdy, quality pottery slab has no chips or cracks. There are some minor nibbles in places around the top rim and a number of glazing faults which have discolored with age. There is crazing across the slab, together with some areas of discoloration and fat staining, as is usual with a piece of this age. The base of the slab has signs of wear through use, but is nice and smooth and there are no chips to it. It weighs a substantial 5.3kg.
In the modern home, these ironstone slabs look stunning on display. And they make the perfect centrepiece when entertaining.
