Antique Victorian White Ironstone English Advertising Pot – Rare Shallow Sized J Sainsbury’s Bloater Paste
This is a listing for a rarer shaped antique Victorian J Sainsbury’s shallow bloater paste pots.
These white ironstone English advertising pots were handmade to be sold containing food products in the J Sainsbury’s grocers shops. Sainsbury’s still exists and is now one of the top supermarkets in the UK, although bloater paste has now been rebranded – it’s a type of fish paste.
The pot features black transfer print advertising for bloater paste. As most jars were discarded with common waste at the time, they often have discoloration and chips. However, this adds to their charm as highly decorative, weathered and chippy pieces.
This examples were recently recovered from a Victorian dump. It therefore shows signs of its life underground. There is crazing and patches of staining all over. However, the black transfer is still remarkably clear. There are also no cracks and just a small chip to the base rim. Overall, it has a wonderful timeworn and unique patina.
They are great collectors items and they also make excellent small serving dishes. I personally use these for olives, butter, cream and jam (the possibilities are endless…)
