Edwardian Huge Two Gallon White Banded Twin-Handled Dairy Jug

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

This is a wonderful example of a very large Edwardian – or possibly earlier – white banded ironstone dairy jug, for use at the time on a commercial scale. Due to its weight it also has a grip at the front.

This huge banded jug is capable of holding two gallons (24 pints) and would have been produced as a commercial item for a dairy or farm. It is certainly a statement piece of white ironstone and in the modern home would make a statement on display, as it measures 33cm tall and 35cm wide. It would look wonderful on display alone, but equally beautiful used a large centrepiece vase for flowers.

Considering this jug is more than 100 years old, and would have been in daily use (which would have been a risky business for a piece of whiteware!) this large banded jug is in exceptional condition. There is crazing throughout but there are no hairlines or cracks. Some of the crazing has stained in the inside of the base, plus there are some minor age spots in areas. The rim is worn, where there is also an old firing mark at the edge of the base.

Height, 33cm overall (height to top rim, 30.5cm); Width, 35cm; Depth, 26cm;  Diameter at top, 19cm
