Antique French Early 20th Century White Ironstone Advertising Pot – Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard
This is a listing for ONE antique French white ironstone advertising pot for Grey-Poupon Dijon Mustard, dating from the early 1900s. A total of two are available to choose from, both in excellent condition but bearing different advertising on their backs.
Made by Sarreguemines, these are sturdy and heavy white ironstone pots. I am always in awe of the quality and detail that goes into antique French advertising pots, and these little pots are no exception.
Considered throwaway objects at the time, these advertising pots have been uncovered from an old French dumping ground and therefore they do show signs of their age and history in their appearance. It is therefore remarkable that both these pots are in excellent condition.
The detail in these prints is astonishing, with a grapevine circling a shield on the front of the pot, and a ribboned banner around the top of the pot. Considering the fact that these pots were intended as throwaway items, the attention that went into the design of these labels really stands out.
I especially like the fact that these pots feature advertising on both the front and the back, and that a range of different advertising prints were used in the back. These are two different examples.
LEFT POT: in mint condition, there are just a few scuff marks. This feature the more common Grey Poupon logo on its back.
RIGHT POT: also in mint condition, there is just a small patch of discolouration to the top rim. Although the print on the back is simpler, with the simple use of text, these pots are a little more difficult to source.
