Large Edwardian White Ironstone WT Avery Scale Plate with Marble Effect – Ideal Cheese Board
A large white ironstone scale plate by WT Avery, with marble effect transfer print, dating from the late Victorian period.
This ironstone scale plate, dating from the late 1800s, is in excellent condition. It is a practical, large size and is a heavy and sturdy piece, measuring 28cm in diameter and 1.2cm in depth. In the late Victorian period, this would have been used as part of a set of scales to weigh produce out in grocers shops.
On the front is a transfer printed marble effect finish, with the ribbon banded logo of WT Avery appearing on the back in black transfer print text. The logo is still very clear.
White ironstone scale plates such as this look great on display, and they also make excellent focal pieces when entertaining. They are ideally suited for use as cheese boards or meat platters, since the white ironstone helps to keep produce cool.
The scale plate is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. There are some surface scratches from use, and some age spots and discoloration, most notably around the edge of the piece. There are also some small grease marks around the edge of the plate on the back, indicating it was most likely used upside down so as to save the marble print from damage in its day to day use.
