Antique Edwardian Carved English Treen Bread Knife
A nice antique Edwardian English carved stainless steel wooden handled bread knife.
Dating from the early 20th Century, this is a nice example of an English carved wooden handled bread knife which is perfect for display as part of a kitchenalia collection.
The carved treen handle has been engraved “BREAD”. At the time of production this would have been quite deep but it is now well worn from use. The “E” has also suffered some loss. Nonetheless, the lettering can clearly be read and it still makes such an interesting carved kitchen utensil to have on display.
The handle has some milks staining and discolouration to it from use over the years. There is also a small split about 3cm in length on the underside. However, this is old and overall the handle is very stable.
The steel blade has also oxidised over time in places from contact with water over the years. However, this is not unusual for steel blades of this age and it is nicely engraved ‘Bread Knife’ together with the maker’s name, A. Breeds of Tunbridge Wells. It is also very sharp still and so, if desired, the blade could be polished up for use again.
Overall, this is a nice piece of collectable kitchenalia.
