Antique Early 20th Century Carved English Bread Board with Wheat & Barley Decoration
This is a lovely example of a deeply carved English breadboard, made in the early 20th Century.
This is a great example of a carved bread board, dating from the early part of the 1900s. Carved breadboards were extremely popular household items at the time, before the standardised squarer loaves took over in popularity later in the Century.
Despite its age, the carving on this bread board is extremely clear and deeply carved. Carved barley weaves itself around the board in an intricate pattern, framing a particularly deeply carved ear of wheat on one side. The perfect board to celebrate the coming of the harvest with!
Although there is some staining to the middle of the board, where it also dips slightly from where it has been used previously, it is otherwise in very good condition. The board sits perfectly flat and is raised higher than many similar boards, which allowed for more elaborate carving. The main face of the board has a warm, rich honey colour to it, a result of regular waxing.
