Early 20th Century Deeply Carved English Bread Knife

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A lovely and unusually shaped English deeply carved wooden bread knife, dating from the early 20th Century.

The carved treen handle has been engraved “BREAD” which is very deep, with little wear, and clearly stands out on the piece. The steel blade is still very sharp and carries the makers mark for “Meriden Cutlery Company”.

The steel blade has turned black in places from exposure to water over time. It is possible to clean this with lemon juice, but it is also fine to use as it is. If you are using the knife regularly, it is important to clean it with a dry cloth rather than using water or wet substances on it. The wooden handle is in nice condition, although there is a very small splash of paint on it, which could possibly be scraped away.

Length, 28cm; Width, 2.5cm
