Early to Mid Twentieth Century Carved English Treen Butter Knife
A nice example of a carved treen handled EPNS butter knife, dating from the early part of the twentieth Century.
The hardwood handle features the word “BUTTER” carved along its length. Although the carving has worn and faded a little over time and through use, it is still very clear. The EPNS blade has tarnished and yellowed a little with age. There are also a few minor surface scratches. This is very usual with knives like this. It is still usable, although it would also be possible to re-plate this very inexpensively should this be desired.
The wood has quite a rich, warm colour to it. Unfortunately, the end of the handle has also had a few knocks, with slices carved off the very tip. However, this does not detract from the attractive carved detail and this would still look very nice on display as part of a kitchenalia collection.
Length, 17.5cm; Width, 2.3cm (at widest point of blade)
