Antique Early 20th Century Dark Wooden Carved English Breadboard
A wonderful carved English breadboard, made by Bramhall in the early to mid 20th Century, with the word “Bread” clearly carved into its border.
This is a great example of a carved English bread board, with a gorgeous rich colour and patination created by the addition of some dark wax at some point in its history.
Carved breadboards were extremely popular household items at the time. This breadboard were made by one of the most famous manufacturers of breadboards at the time, Bramhall, notable for the use of a teardrop in the top of the carved letter ‘B’ of their boards.
Despite its age, the carving on this “Bread” board is still very nicely defined and clear. It is unusual to find them with both mottos and more intricate garland borders combined and this example stands out with a nicely carved rosette and leaf garland at the bottom of the board.
This antique breadboard has a great colour and is in nice condition. It sits flat and has a wonderful rich colour. There are quite a few knife marks from use, more notably on the middle section and the top half of the border. The wax has accentuated these, creating a unique patina.
